You're not a track sprinter starting fresh on a banked line. You're tired, sitting at 60kph in a 150-rider bunch, and you get one jump to win it. This is how you prepare for that moment.
Track: fresh legs, 10–30s, standing start, pure power.
Road: after 200km, 10–20s rolling from 60–65kph — and it has to be repeatable. Position decides half the race before you even jump.
After 4–5 hours, glycolytic capacity, muscle buffering and mental focus become the limiters — not your peak watts.
You don't need another gym PB. You need power when you're empty.
Finish speed swings with wind and the gradient of the last 200m — 60kph into a headwind, 80kph with a tailwind and a fast run-in. In a 56×10 that's the difference between spinning 84rpm and 111rpm for the same effort.
A contraction time of ~0.24s per leg lines up with roughly 125rpm — the same physics as a track 200m. Even on the fastest finish, 56×10 only gets you to ~111rpm. Slower finishes fall further short, which is exactly where gear choice starts to matter.
Most of the physiological damage in a bunch sprint happens before the sprint even starts. The surges, the fights for wheels, the repeated accelerations just to hold position in the last 3–5km put you deep into lactate long before the flag drops on the final 200m.
The riders who win aren't always the ones with the highest peak power — they're the ones who can tolerate that accumulated fatigue and still produce a full, clean jump on top of it. That's arguably the single biggest differentiator in bunch sprinting, and it's trained by Progressive Efforts on tired legs, not by another maximal sprint on fresh ones.
You're sprinting in a huge gear — 56×10 — and that gear keeps you in the acceleration phase for the entire 200–250m. You never reach terminal velocity: every metre of a road sprint is still about applying more force, not holding a top speed you've already found.
A track sprinter does reach terminal velocity. Once you physically can't accelerate any further, aerodynamic drag becomes the only thing still costing you speed — so dropping into the saddle and getting low pays off. On the banking it's also close to impossible to do anything else: the G-forces through the curve need a seated, stable base just to hold the bike on its line.
On the road, in a straight sprint that's still accelerating, standing wins every time. Stay out of the saddle, all the way to the line.
Six effort types. This is your menu, not your homework — don't do all six in one week. Pick two or three, and master the feel of each. Race sprinting is RAC + MAC + PROG, stacked.
If you can only train three efforts this week: Rolling Accelerations + Motor Lead-outs + one Progressive Effort after a long ride. That's 90% of a road sprint.
56×10 isn't automatically your race gear — it's a good gear for a fast finish. Your actual finish speed swings with wind direction and the gradient of the last 200m, and that swing changes what cadence a fixed gear puts you at.
The same swing shows up in contraction speed: from a relaxed ~0.36s per leg at 84rpm to a sharp ~0.24s at 127rpm. That's most of the gap between grinding the pedals and flicking them.
If today's finish is likely slow — headwind, a drag up the last 200m — drop to 54×11 or smaller so cadence stays closer to the ~125rpm your contraction speed wants. If it's fast — tailwind, downhill kick, a long lead-out — 56×10 holds that cadence for longer. Gear for the finish you're actually going to get, not the one you trained in.

A full lead-out train can save you up to 30% of the power a solo rider spends.
Deep or disc for race-day aero. Shallow and light for everyday training.
Lower is more aero — but only if it doesn't close your hips and cost you power.
Headwind rewards torque. Tailwind rewards cadence. Train both.
Uphill sprints reward torque off the start. Downhill sprints reward overspeed legs.
Heavy squats at 85%+ 1RM, overcoming isometrics, eccentric-accentuated lifts. Twice a week off-season, once a week to maintain in-season.
30–40% 1RM moved as fast as possible: Olympic lifts, jumps, bounds, single-leg work. Train the quick relaxation, not just the contraction — that's your 0.24s.
60–90% 1RM for 8–12 reps, sled pushes, core work, plus your on-bike Progressive efforts.
Short warm-up with 2–3 priming sprints — high force, no lactate. Keep the legs warm right up to the last minute. Caffeine and carbs loaded, not experimented with.
Stay hydrated, stay warm. Top 10 by 2km to go, top 5 by 1km. Drafting skill saves real watts here.
Pick your gear before you need it. Commit to one jump, not two. Breathe out hard at 100m to go. Don't look back. Go to the line.
Cold water, light massage, sleep. Carbs and protein within 30 minutes. In a stage race: protect glycogen, don't waste a match you don't need to.
